The word Kottayam is derived from Malayalam word‘Kottaand‘Akkam’,literally meaning the inside part of a fort. Kottayam district is a mélange of rain-kissed fields, palm-fringed backwaters and ubiquitous rubber plantations, while Kottayam town itself is more of a hub and a trading centre.Kottayam thrives on the rubber and spice plantations that have made it a commercial centre. It was the first town in India to achieve 100 per cent literacy and got the first collage and printing press in Kerala. Trucked close by is aymanam village, writer Arundhati Roy’s birthplace and the site for the god of small things. As the novel; indicates, this area is home to a large Syrian Christian population. Apart from being a picturesque backwater, the land boasts of being the first 100% literate district of India.
